I’ve been a maker for as long as I can remember. My very first business in primary school was called Fluff and Stuff (no joke), and from there, I never really stopped. I sold handmade jewellery and clothing at markets, handbags at pop-ups across Sydney (back in the days before Shopify), and after becoming a mum, I began creating fluid clothing that moved with real life. Along the way, I poured candles, studied photography, and launched a gift delivery business designed to spark random acts of kindness. Each venture became a new chapter, teaching me how creativity connects us.
Howie Studio is the gathering of all these threads. After an entrepreneurial sabbatical, in 2023 I gave in, and as a way to mend heartbreak, I began re-learning the art of hand-knotting strings of pearls. It was a skill I first practiced in my early years of making jewellery, and one that has now grown into Howie’s world. It has taken two years to find the courage to share what I've been making.
Right now, the spark is beaded jewellery, but my dream is for Howie Studio to keep evolving. After all, Howie may be the spirit, but I am the human behind it, dreaming, making, and forever chasing the next spark.
Howie’s First Spark is a little love letter to beadwork, rooted in an ancient tradition that stretches back tens of thousands of years. Inspired by the earliest adornments crafted from natural materials, each piece honours the legacy of craftsmanship passed down through generations while being reimagined with a cheeky, contemporary twist.
Howie’s pieces center on the meticulous art of knotted beadwork, a refined technique developed centuries ago to protect and space precious beads and pearls, keeping them safe and showing off their natural beauty. The tactile luxury of a knotted strand is supple and fluid, letting each piece drape gracefully and move with the wearer, almost as if it has a mind of its own.
